Background of the Study
Religious discourse in Nigeria is a cornerstone of public communication, particularly in sermons delivered by religious leaders. This study conducts a comparative analysis of pragmatic strategies in Nigerian sermons, examining how language is used to engage congregations and convey spiritual messages. Sermons incorporate various pragmatic devices such as repetition, imperatives, and context-specific markers that serve to persuade and comfort audiences (Umeh, 2023). By comparing sermon structures from different religious traditions—such as Christianity and Islam—the research highlights both common and divergent pragmatic practices. The study investigates how these strategies facilitate clarity, foster emotional engagement, and reinforce doctrinal messages. Additionally, it explores the influence of cultural and regional factors on pragmatic choices in religious discourse, offering insights into how tradition and modernity coexist in Nigerian spirituality (Adamu, 2024; Chinwe, 2025).

Statement of the Problem
Despite the importance of effective communication in religious settings, there is limited comparative research on the pragmatic strategies used in Nigerian sermons. Inconsistencies in the application of pragmatic devices may result in reduced message clarity and audience disengagement (Umeh, 2023). The lack of systematic analysis across different religious contexts hinders efforts to identify best practices for sermon delivery and to enhance the overall effectiveness of religious discourse (Adamu, 2024; Chinwe, 2025).

Objectives of the Study

  • To document pragmatic strategies used in Nigerian sermons.

  • To compare these strategies across different religious traditions.

  • To recommend improvements for enhancing sermon effectiveness.

Research Questions

  • What pragmatic devices are commonly employed in Nigerian sermons?

  • How do these devices differ between religious contexts?

  • What impact do they have on audience engagement?

Significance of the Study
This study offers critical insights into the pragmatic aspects of Nigerian religious discourse, helping religious leaders and communication scholars improve sermon delivery and audience connection. The findings will support the development of more effective and culturally resonant religious communication strategies (Umeh, 2023; Adamu, 2024; Chinwe, 2025).

Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study focuses on sermon structures in Nigerian religious discourse and does not extend to other forms of religious communication.

Definitions of Terms

  • Pragmatic Strategies: Techniques used to convey intended meanings effectively.

  • Sermon Structures: The organization and delivery of religious speeches.
